Greece, renowned for its stunning coastlines, is a prime destination for sun-seekers and beach lovers worldwide. However, its immense popularity has brought challenges, such as overcrowding and excessive commercialization of beach areas. To address these issues, the Greek government has introduced a new set of regulations, commonly referred to as the ‘beach bill,’ aimed at ensuring a more equitable and enjoyable beach experience for all visitors.

The rise in the number of sunbeds encroaching on the beaches sparked significant public outcry last year, culminating in widespread demands for change. Responding to these concerns, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently announced via TikTok the details of the new legislation designed to restore balance to Greece’s coastal areas.

Key aspects of the 'beach bill' include:

Sunbed Restrictions: Starting this spring, a significant rule comes into effect where 70% of beach areas must remain free of sunbeds to alleviate overcrowding. This requirement increases to 85% for protected zones, while ecologically sensitive areas, designated as ‘untouchable beaches,’ will see a complete ban on sunbeds.

Shoreline Space: To further enhance accessibility and enjoyment of the sea, there must be a minimum distance of four meters between sunbeds and the shoreline.

Fair Business Practices: The allocation of beach concessions will now be handled through transparent online auctions, ensuring a fair process. This measure aims to limit the monopolization of beachfront spaces by local businesses.

Enforcement through Technology: To ensure adherence to these rules, authorities plan to use drones for monitoring compliance along Greece’s beaches.

These new changes have been put in place to protect the natural beauty of Greek beaches and ensure they remain accessible and enjoyable for both locals and tourists. With the world’s most breathtaking shorelines at its doorstep, Greece is taking decisive steps to safeguard these precious natural resources for generations to come.
